It's almost here! We look forward to seeing many of our LES families participating as registered runners & walkers and/or cheering along the sidelines at the Res Run this Sunday (10/22) morning! As a recipient of funds raised through this Lafayette Chamber & City of Lafayette co-sponsored event, our school is represented on race day by 10 Esteemed Volunteers who also help with event set-up or cleanup/take-down. Three people have committed thus far, and we need 7 more amazing folks, like YOU, to step up and represent Lafayette Elementary in this capacity on Sunday. Join fellow awesome volunteers Kara Cox, Ria Di Costanza and Rebecca Thompson by adding your name here and modeling how the Lafayette Elementary crew shows up in service of our school and community! Let's bring out that Leopard Pride! Registration for the run is still open for anyone who'd like to sign up, or sponsor a teacher/staff member! |

Westival Wrap-Up & Thank You |
|
Volunteer Spotlight: Westival Wrap-Up A note from Westival Chair, Amy Coombe: All - what a perfect afternoon to gather as a school community for Westival! Thank you to everyone who volunteered by creating scarecrows (I've already spotted a few proudly displayed around town!), baking contributions to the bake sale and cake walk (#somanycakes!), and running the various booths during the event. Special thank you to the Scout troop (and parents) who spent the night safeguarding our class scarecrows, Jennie Tong for concessions shopping, Kim McGuire for running the bake sale, Sam Patath & Ria Di Costanzo for checking in all volunteers, Effie Casella, Briannon McCurdy, Rebecca & Randall Thompson, and Monica Segobia for setting up, and Carrie Knudtsen, Jenean Smith, Jenny McCarthy Redman, Alex Cox, Kirti & Manish Chitnis, and Monica Segobia (again!) for staying to clean-up at the end of the event. We are also appreciative of our teachers and staff who helped sell tickets, including Mrs. Barclay, Mr. Winter, Mrs. Thomason, Mrs. Roberts, Mrs. Rikeman, and Mrs. Mikalis, and of Mr. Austin who gave up his Saturday morning and evening to help us open and close campus. As you can see, the saying "many hands make light work" truly applies to Westival! And, on behalf of the PTA & our LES Community, a huge, "back at ya!" to our own: Amy Coombe, Westival Chair & Volunteer Extraordinaire After experiencing the amazing transformation of our school quad filled with scarecrows, game booths, baked goods and having a great time as a community at LES's annual Fall Festival, we shine a Leopard SPOTlight on Amy Coombe, the Westival chair. Amy and her husband, Burt, are parents to 5th grader Dorothy (Dory) and 2nd grader Charlie. Amy's whole family was involved with Westival, from planning and prep (including expert input on selecting fun student prizes), to Burt shuttling items back and forth from the Westival shed, and Dory helping manage a game, to Charlie "helping" Mr. Austin with cleanup afterward, the Coombe family's efforts ensured that Westival ran smoothly for all to enjoy! And Amy's contributions to our school don't stop with Westival! She is also a Teacher Appreciation co-chair, the PTA Historian and a Room Parent for Charlie's class. Did you know that Amy organized lunch for the teachers upon their return from summer break? And that during Parent-Teacher Conference Week, Amy and Dory baked cupcakes to put in each teacher's mailbox? We are so very grateful for the positive impact Amy has on our community through the all the time, effort and energy she gives to LES. Thank you Amy! |

Countywide Vision Zero Needs Fall 2023 Input |
|
The Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) is developing a Countywide Safety Action Plan. The Plan will incorporate Vision Zero strategies to eliminate severe traffic injuries and fatalities in Contra Costa County. It will consider how to improve safety for all, including those biking, driving, walking, and taking the train or bus.
Help identify safety issues in your area with the interactive map. To give your input, click on a city, drop a pin on the map, and leave a comment describing the challenges at that location. A huge part of this effort is receiving input from the public on the interactive maps. The CCTA and team are looking for mapping input from parents and students as they are highly aware of safety issues with walking, biking, and driving to and from school. |
