LPIE Science Fair @ LES

Hello Parents!

Science fair is almost here!

It's going to be an exciting night for our LES community!

We still have parent volunteering opportunities so please consider signing up here!

The following information to help answer any questions with project drop off, guest scientists at the fair (parent volunteers) and more.

Project Labeling

Please ensure all parts of your student’s science project (science board, jars, volcanoes, samples, etc) are labeled with your student’s name, grade and teacher.

  • If any parts get separated, we want to make sure we can match them up to the correct project.
  • If your student is working on a team, just one of the students should be listed on each part of the project (the same name please 😀)

Drop off projects between 8am and 9am on Thursday morning 3/14.

Tables in the MPR will be labeled by grade level.  We will have a few volunteers who can help direct you/your student to the correct table.  To make sure this all goes smoothly, we have planned for the following:

  • CAR DROP OFF: If you drop your student off by car, we will have volunteers in the car drop off line to collect the science project and walk it into the MPR (you will not have to park or get out of the car).
  • WALK TO SCHOOL: If you/your student typically walks to school, you/your student can drop the project in the MPR yourself.
  • CATS: If your student goes to CATs, we will inform CATs that they may have some science projects dropped off with the student prior to 8am.  We will see if they can have a staff member help the students bring the project to the MU when they are released to go to their classroom.
  • NONE OF THE ABOVE: If none of the above apply to you, then after the bell rings at 8:30am, parents can park their car along the dropoff area and walk the project into the MPR.

Guest Scientist (they have the gold ribbon stickers!)

We will have parent volunteers acting as guest scientists (LPIE lab coats and all!) in the evening at the science fair.  Please encourage your student to find and speak with a Guest Scientist to humbly brag about their project!

The guest scientist will speak briefly with each student about their experiment (really easy questions, like why they chose a project and what did they learn) and the student will get a gold ribbon on their science board.

  • By no way is this a requirement, so no need to push any student beyond what they are truly comfortable doing.  Even if they just point to their board and give a thumbs up (or down, honesty is also commended) if asked if they like science,  they can also get a sticker for all their effort.
  • We really want the students to enjoy the whole Science Fair so there is no expectation that they stay with their projects during the entire Science Fair.  The only ask is that they speak to one of the Guest Scientists, which shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.  Hopefully, they will be excited to show you their science experiment too!

We would like to maximize the number of experiments that families who arrive after 6pm can view.  Therefore, unless you are leaving after 6:30pm, please leave your experiment at the school.

  1. If you walk to the school, you can drop by the MU to pick up the project.
  2. Please do not park at the drop off curb at the front of the school to pick up the science project!  If you need to park, please park across the street on Moraga Blvd or on School Street, and walk across the street.
    • If your family is leaving the Science Fair after 6:30, please collect all parts of the project and take it home.
    • If you leave prior to 6:30, you can pick up Science Projects on Friday.
    • For those projects not collected by 9am on Friday morning, volunteers will help gather projects by grade level and classroom, and the projects will be delivered to the classrooms so your student can take them home.

Exhibitors

Along with the crowd favorites Jungle James, NorCal Bats and more, this year LES welcomes our newest exhibitor -  RovTour!  You may have have seen them at the Bay Area Maker Faire but if you missed them, they'll be at the science fair! Come check out the amazing underwater Romotely Operated Vehicle robots and drones that not only teaches about technology but also brings awareness to keeping our precious bodies of water clean!

Food Trucks

El Paisa Tack Truck aka Abel's Taco Truck, Kona Ice and Nana Bear's Mini Donuts will be on site to make this evening a complete event! Check out the menu below for the taco truck so you can be ready to order the day of the event!
